Ottawa, April 11, 2014 – The Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, Mario Dion, accepts the findings of the report tabled today in Parliament by the Auditor General of Canada.

“I agree there were unacceptable procedural delays in dealing with two older case files before my Office and I want to assure federal public servants that we are doing our utmost to make sure this does not happen again,” said Mr. Dion.

Even before the Auditor General began his investigations, Mr. Dion put in place improved oversight measures to ensure complaints would be both processed quicker and reviewed with senior managers on a regular basis.

“I believe these improvements make it almost impossible to have a repeat of the incidents cited by the Auditor General,” said Mr. Dion.

Mr. Dion was first appointed three and a half years ago when the Office of the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner was in a state of turmoil.  During his tenure, Mr. Dion has fully staffed the Office, provided ongoing training, cleared almost the entire case backlog and tabled eight reports of findings of wrongdoing to Parliament.

“I agree with the Auditor General that it would not be reasonable to expect that 100% of our files would be without error.  However, we strive for excellence on a daily basis,” said Mr. Dion

The Public Sector Integrity Commissioner deals with allegations of wrongdoing and complaints of reprisal in the federal public service.  His mandate is to treat each case in a fair, equitable and rigorous manner while ensuring that files are dealt with in a timely fashion.
